Exposure to TV Screens Causes ‘Heart Diseases In Children’

There have been several reports on how television screens are detrimental to your child’s health and how they have grabbed their minds. The American Heart Association (AHA) has revealed that continuous exposure to screens is harmful for your child’s heart. Yes, you heard it. It causes heart problems at early ages.


Dr. Stephen Daniels, a spokesman for the American Heart Association, said that exposure to television screens for longer times induce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Moreover, when they get habitual of the routine it continues to the childhood also.


Experts at AHA reviewed the statistics of past 20 years and came to a conclusion about the co-relation of cardiovascular disease and self-reported screen time.

“Heart health starts during childhood, so I think it’s very appropriate that the American Heart Association looks at every issue that can contribute to heart disease,” said Dr. David Hill, chairman of the Council on Communication and Media for the American Academy of Pediatrics, in a report filed by Fox6Now.

If your child drinks juice, make sure it's 100 percent juice without added sugars and limit his or her servings. Look for canned fruit that says it's light or packed in its own juice, meaning it's low in added sugar. Keep in mind that one-quarter cup of dried fruit counts as one cup-equivalent of fruit. When consumed in excess, dried fruits can contribute extra calories.

  • Saturated and trans fats.Limit saturated fats — fats that mainly come from animal sources of food, such as red meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products. Look for ways to replace saturated fats with vegetable and nut oils, which provide essential fatty acids and vitamin E. Healthier fats are also naturally present in olives, nuts, avocados and seafood. Limit trans fats by avoiding foods that contain partially hydrogenated oil.

Summer Safety Tips

Summer in Rochester is a beautiful and wonderful time of year. The weather is pleasant and there is so much to do - swimming, boating in one of the lakes, picnicking in the parks, or enjoying one of many outdoor sports. Enjoy this time of year even more by taking a few precautions to protect your child(ren) and yourself from some of the more dangerous aspects of this season.

Sun Safety

Sun safety should actually be practiced year-round, but we are more likely to experience the damaging effects of the sun in the summer simply due to the greater amount of time spent outdoors. The following are precautions that should be taken by children and adults to avoid sunburn, sun/heat stroke, and dehydration:

Use Sunscreen:    Wear sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. Apply sunscreen all over the body (even in places covered by clothing) 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Sunscreen should be worn for any outdoor activity, even on overcast or cloudy days.

Avoid the Heat:    Avoid outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are the most intense.

Get the Right Gear:   Wear sunglasses with 100% UV (ultraviolet) protection. Everyone, especially very young or very fair-haired children, should wear a hat. Wear cotton clothing, preferably with a tight knit.

Stay Hydrated:   Be sure to consume enough water, and avoid sugary and/or caffeinated drinks such as soft drinks.

For Babies:    Dress your baby in lightweight clothing with long pants and long-sleeved shirts and a wide-brimmed hat. Keep baby's feet covered with a lightweight blanket. If necessary, small amounts of sunscreen can be applied to exposed areas. Use strollers with a large canopy.

Water Safety

Whether swimming in the neighborhood pool or boating in a local lake, the water provides many opportunities for fun days and happy memories. Keep your child safe by following a few simple guidelines:

# Swim under adult and/or lifeguard supervision only.

Never be out of arm's reach of your baby or toddler in or near the pool or body of water.

Follow all posted rules.

Avoid use of inflatable swimming aids ("floaters"). These can provide a false sense of security.

On a boat: all children must wear properly-fitting life jackets at all times.

Do not consume alcohol when swimming or boating.

Pay attention to the weather conditions and forecasts and take proper precautions.

Mental Health Crisis is taking a toll on the mind of young children
New Delhi, India- With the increasing mental health crisis and depressive disorder among the school-going children, Young Angels, a publishing house, believes that one of the best methods to overcome social isolation and feeling of loneliness is to construct a reading habit. Safety Of The Girl Child: Tips For Parents

Statistics provided by the World Health Organization in their factsheet (2017) titled ‘Violence against women’ state that 1 in 3 women face sexual harassment. One of the many facts published by the Virtual Knowledge Centre to End Violence against Women and Girls, an initiative of UN Women, states that up to 50% of sexual assaults are committed against girls under the age of 16.

Human trafficking, sexual violence and harassment have become a staple element of everyday news. Considering the fact that we live in a digital world and that children have access to phones right from a very young age, cybercrimes are also a very prominent threat. With so much violence being perpetrated against children, it’s important to teach the girl child that it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially when she is on her own.

Going by the saying ‘parents are the first teachers’, you are the best person to teach your child about personal safety. It is important to inculcate a sense of awareness right from a very young age and help your child think smart and develop a strong character.

Here are some tips that parents can give their girl child to ensure she remains safe:

For primary schoolers (ages 6–9)

Information about self: Children should know their full name, home address, and phone number. They should also know the names of three trusted adults and ways of contacting them if the need should ever arise.

Situational awareness: Situational awareness is extremely important and can be taught with the help of some very simple methods. For example, ask your child to notice three things around her or the shortest route to the exit in a closed space. You can use fun games to teach your child to be situationally aware, a skill which will prove very useful in the long term

Safe and unsafe touch: Teach your child the difference between safe and unsafe touch, and reassure her that you will believe her words, no matter what. Do not explain it as good and bad touch as a bad touch can also feel good. Do not allow your child to be hugged and kissed by someone she does not want to be touched by just because she is in the ‘cute’ age. Children know when they are in an uncomfortable situation.

No-go-tell: This follows the above tip. Teach your child to shout ‘No’, and then to ‘go’ and ‘tell’ a trusted adult if she ever feels uncomfortable or unsafe.
Child helpline number: Ensure that your child memorises the Child Helpline number – 1098 – and dials it in case she feels she can’t speak to any known adult. Perpetrators of child sexual abuse are most often someone known to the child.

Stranger danger: Sometimes, in your presence, your child could feel emboldened to talk to strangers, for example, the door-to-door salesman. She might then speak to other strangers even in your absence. Explain to your child that she should not speak to strangers, travel with them or take/eat/drink anything from them, whether you are present with your child or not.

No wandering alone: Teach your child to stick to the routes you have shown her and always travel in the company of someone. Discourage her from discovering new places alone.

For preteens (ages 10–12)

Self-defence: It is always a good idea to teach your daughter how to defend and protect herself in any dangerous situation. Along with aiding her to stay safe, it will also give her a sense of confidence, which can deter someone from trying to harm her.

Always be alert and aware: Again, situational awareness is super important. Teach your child to mentally prepare a plan of action for any situation. Known locations or people do not guarantee safety. Hence, it is always important to be on guard.

Trust your instinct: Women and girls have an innate skill of sensing creepiness, be it a glance that is too long or a touch that is uncomfortable. Teach your daughters to trust their instinct and pay heed to it.

For teens (ages 13–18)

This is the age when girls are discovering themselves. It is also the time when they feel attracted towards someone. Attention from boys might seem like a compliment but teach your child to be a strong, confident and assertive young woman.

# Say NO: Understanding the value of consent is essential. Teach your daughter to say ‘No’ if she feels uncomfortable and not feel pressured by anyone under any circumstances.

# Open communication: As your daughter grows, it is natural that she might want to spend more time with friends, see new places and experiment. Let her know that you are always there for her, encourage open conversations especially about things considered taboo and explain reasons for curfews and ensure they are met.

# In the digital space: Your child might already have a phone and be active on social media. Make her aware of the dangers present online and encourage caution. Tell her not to share personal details online or befriend someone she doesn’t know.

# Awareness: Yes, again! Make your daughter aware of the different types of harassment and to speak up against it whilst always ensuring her own safety first.

Here are some ways of assessing whether your child is facing any safety issues:

# Is your child happy?
# Does she show any signs of fear or distress?
# Does she have any suspicious bruise, scar or pain?
# Has she become secretive?
# Are there any sudden behavioural changes?
# Is she comfortable with her friends’ circle?
# Does she try to avoid going to public spaces? If so, why?
# Does she feel comfortable travelling in the school van/mode of transport?

What Your Kid Will Learn in First Grade

First grade is an exciting time for new literacy skills. Your child now knows at least 2,000 words! She has a better sense of how words and language work and can sound out more complex words. She's becoming a better speller, too. In math, she's getting faster by the week at adding and subtracting, and she's learning to solve word problems. But your first grader still needs plenty of encouragement. In fact, she needs it now more than ever, says Susan Quinn, a reading specialist and elementary school teacher at Saint Brendan School in the Bronx, New York. "Kids will start to not like school at this age if they feel that they're not smart or that they're not doing well," Quinn says. So give your child extra doses of support this year. First graders are able to talk more about their feelings, so be sure to listen and help out if your child gets discouraged. Here are the important learning milestones children will typically achieve in first grade, with tips for helping your child stay on track.


At School:  First graders will be able to read at least 150 high-frequency words ("sight words") by year's end; they will be able to read grade-level books fluently and understand them.

At Home:  Give your budding bookworm lots of opportunities to read aloud every day. Have him read a short story aloud while you're cooking or putting dishes away, or give him the important job of reading to his younger sibling. Take turns reading the pages, help him sound out and learn unfamiliar words (use contextual clues like surrounding words or pictures), and keep discussing stories by asking questions ("Why do you think she did that?"). Help him learn prediction by asking, "What do you think will happen next?" and ask him to retell a story in a few sentences to practice summarizing. Always have kids' books or magazines handy if you need to wait somewhere, such as a doctor's office or train station.


At School:  In first grade, kids will learn to spell three- and four-letter words and write clear, coherent full sentences. By the end of the year, your child will be forming short paragraphs with at least three or four sentences, and will also be able to write a basic short story (perhaps one about losing a tooth or learning to ride a bike).

At Home:  Have your child keep a notebook at home, Quinn says. Kids this age love to write lists and notes to friends, so keep a special notebook on hand for this. It won't be graded, so your child should have fun with it. Encourage her to draw pictures and write without worrying about correcting spelling or grammar. Give fun writing prompts. After you visit the park, ask your child to write about the interesting things she did. Give children prompts connected to reading, too. "After you've read Charlotte's Web, have them write about a pet that they would like to have, or ask what they would name a pet pig if they had one," Quinn suggests.

Number Sense

At School:  By the end of the year, kids will be able to count, read, write, and order sequential numbers up to 100. They will also learn how to compare numbers using the signs for greater than, less than, and equal to. First graders will be able to add whole numbers with a sum of 20 or less and subtract from a whole number 20 or less, and they will be introduced to the concept of place value when adding and subtracting two-digit numbers.

At Home:  Help your first grader see how math is a big part of everyday life. When you go grocery shopping, talk about how much money you'll need to buy milk and bread. While waiting in line, practice counting by twos and fives together. Hang up a number chart in your child's bedroom showing numbers one to 100 and find a place mat with numbers on it to practice counting during meals.

Measurement and Geometry

At School:  In class, kids will compare the length, weight, and volume of two or more objects. They will measure length using small objects, such as paper clips, as units and they will compare, identity, and describe common shapes.

At Home:  When cooking, show your child all the numbers on recipes and talk about what they mean as you measure the ingredients. Get a pitcher and a variety of cups and have your child experiment with volume by pouring the same amounts of liquid into different-size cups and different amounts into same-size cups. Have fun with the scale at home and use it to weigh people and objects. Talk about 3-D shapes of objects, such as a tissue box (cube) or ball (sphere), and discuss the different architectural shapes of buildings outside. Examine big and small plates and ask whether they're the same shape. "Shapes can be a lot of fun," Quinn says. "Seeing these as part of their life, not just something taught in school, definitely makes a difference."

Time and Money

At School:  Another skill kids will develop further is telling time; first graders will be able to read a clock face to the nearest half hour. They will understand concepts such as "an hour from now," and they will be able to name the days of the week and months of the year. They will also learn to identify different coins, know the value of each one, and combine different amounts (for example, two nickels equal one dime).

At Home:  Even if you have a digital clock, find an analog one and point out when the big hand is on the six, or on the 12, and what that means. Look at monthly calendars together, and let your child mark important dates and events. Keep talking about what you did "today" and "yesterday," and what you'll do "tomorrow" or "next week." Play games with coins. Take a pile of spare change and ask your child how many ways he can make 10 cents, 25 cents, or 75 cents.
